Silliman University Medical Center Sustains Mangrove Planting Initiative in Si-it, Siaton
Silliman University Medical Center (SUMC) reaffirmed its long-term commitment to environmental stewardship with a return visit to the Mangrove Planting Project site in Si-it, Siaton, Negros Oriental on May 20, 2025.
The project, which began in May 2023, is now in its evaluation phase under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It continues to thrive, thanks to the strong partnership between SUMC and the Si-it Bay Farmers Association (SBFA), as well as the dedicated involvement of the local community.
This initiative is a key component of SUMC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, supporting national efforts to protect marine ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and build a more sustainable and resilient environment.
During the site visit, members of SUMC’s executive management and other hospital staff assessed the progress of the mangrove area and engaged with local stakeholders. In line with its commitment to holistic community service, SUMC also offered free basic health services, including blood pressure monitoring and random blood sugar testing. These services are part of SUMC’s ongoing efforts to promote preventive healthcare and raise awareness about common health issues.
Through sustained, community-centered initiatives such as this, SUMC continues to fulfill its mission of fostering environmental responsibility while advancing public health and well-being.
