HISTORY AND LEGACY

A Legacy of Care, Built for Today

Silliman University Medical Center was first established as a modest infirmary in 1901, a project of the Presbyterian Board for Silliman University’s Extension Program. From a 30-bed Mission Hospital, SUMC has evolved into the 300-bed institution that it is today. Since the beginning, we have catered primarily to Dumaguete and its surrounding areas, but our reach has since expanded beyond this.

SUMC is the second-oldest American and Protestant-founded hospital in the Philippines, started by Dr. Henry Langheim and his wife, Mrs. Ruth Eleanor Armstrong-Langheim. In 1974, Silliman University Medical Center laid down its foundations for the construction of a modern building on Aldecoa Drive.

Since then, SUMC has established itself as its own corporate entity in 1999. Today, Silliman University holds 493 support staff, 321 nurses, 282 medical staff consultants, 219 board-certified diplomats/fellows, 102 other professionals, 52 physicians, and 48 medical technologists as of August 2025.
